God, I hate Mailchimp

I have talked about this before… but holy s*** Mailchimp is the worst platform I have ever come across.

I honestly think Mailchimp is actively trying to push people away from using it.

Here are all the reasons you should never use this tool that feels like it was forged in hell itself:

User interface: I spend about 70 hours a week looking at a range of ESP interfaces. I have played with Klaviyo, Omnisend, SendLane, Attentive, you name it. But when it comes to Mailchimp, I always find myself getting lost. They have naming conventions that you won’t find on any other platform. Are you looking for an automation or in Mailchimp’s world… ‘a journey’. Are you looking for a list or segment? or in Mailchimp’s world ‘an audience’. Or are you looking for customer support? Or in Mailchimp’s world the ‘figure it out yourself button.’

Customer Support: I have been fully ghosted by Mailchimp’s 24/7 support lines twice at this point. I open up a chat log, start talking, and when the questions get tough, the person on the other end just stops responding. The second time I was following up for 20 minutes before I heard anything back.

‘Journeys’: The automations that mailchimp allows you to build just suck. You cannot apply dynamic filters, you can’t create dynamic splits… If you are running any sort of serious automations, or hey… call me crazy… but a proper email strategy… Mailchimp’s automations will make you lose your mind.

Segmentation: The segment builder in Mailchimp does not allow for AND and OR conditions in the same segment, meaning your segments are super limited in terms of who can be in them.

Sign-up forms: You can’t even tag people based on what they say in the form… like wtf… what else is a form good for besides getting their email address.

Here is the thing, Mailchimp has a first mover’s advantage. They were on the scene before anyone else was when it came to providing an email platform for people. But things have evolved, and strangely, Mailchimp seems to have gotten worse AND more expensive.

I am telling you this because a lot of people come to me asking what platform they should start on, and what happens is that they get so entrenched in using something that sucks (Mailchimp) that when they realise how bad it is, they have to spend a bunch of money migrating when they could have saved $1,000’s if they had just chosen the right platform.

What is the right platform? Here are my recs:

Klaviyo - Ecommerce
Omnisend - Ecommerce (30% off in the first 3 months with code GAVIN30)
Beehiiv - B2B (like me)
