In person is king
I have been helping a few businesses as of late with email marketing, specifically related to b2b sales. Normally we do ecommerce email, but B2B sales is becoming a larger part of what we do.
Here is the thing with email and b2b…
And I may be in the minority here…
But I do not think when it comes to generating sales…
Email is enough.
Let me explain. We are running a few cold email campaigns for some of our clients, whereby they give us a list of contacts, and we try and generate sales through them. Note, these contacts are cold, they have never been contacted by our clients before.
We start by sending emails to these contacts, with the focus being… getting a positive response, followed by an attempt to get them on a phone call.
The thing is, this way of generating leads is sooooo saturated. Everyone does it, which means its effectiveness has really waned.
Now it doesn’t mean it does not work, it does, but not like it used to. I remember hearing stories of 6 - 8 percent positive reply rates, now people are happy if they get 1%.
For cold email to be effective, you need to up the ante, and how we have been doing that is by syncing a salesperson into that funnel, whereby, based on how people interact with the cold emails, they are then triggered to physically call that lead, meaning we are stepping outside of the world of email.
Here is an example of what we built in relation to a cold email infrastructure that reaches out to 6k people a month
We purchased 30 domains that reach out to 20 new profiles each day
If anyone in that 6k list clicks an email, that triggers a notification for a salesperson to then call that lead
The lead is called, with the added benefit of the person who has been called being at least a bit more familiar with the brand, having interacted with the emails from that same company
What we are doing here is yes generating leads through email, but also using email as a support channel for lead generation rather than the be-all end-all.
That’s how you run cold email. The reality is, the closer you can get to the in-person connection i.e. the phone call, the better than just the email.
Hence… in person is king.

Update on my In-box
People seem to like my business updates, so here is a quick wrap up of last month and overview for the next month:
Last month
We made a new full-time hire, welcome aboard, Caio ;) This brings our total full-time head count to 6
We have been running YouTube consistently for the last 4 months, with us hitting about 650 subscribers last month
We tried building out some AI models for copywriting and I am still working on this
I hired a YouTube specialist to optimise all of my thumbnails and all of the descriptions for some past YouTube videos, and all of the future ones. I think this is helping a bit with the subscriber growth, and we are seeing some solid growth in impressions on the channel as a whole
This month
We are starting to run ads to get more business
We have started planning everything for Black Friday and have even finalised our strategy from a high level for our clients
We have started investing in SEO again (about $3k a month) and will aim to hit 100 clicks a month for specific high-intent keywords.
I am travelling to Argentina to meet the team on August 15th. This will be my first time meeting them in person
Upwork continues to be our biggest source of new leads, which is great, but I never want to be beholden to one source for business, so while Upwork continues to generate new business for me, I want to expand out through ads and SEO
That is all I got on the big picture perspective. I’ll give you an update again next month!
