This NEVER works

I was talking to someone who reads this newsletter regularly, and he said one of the reasons why he likes to read is that I share my honest takes on things.

If I recommend a software, it’s because I have honestly used it. If I don’t recommend it, it’s because I have honestly had a bad experience with it. Take a look at my post about Mailchimp last week, for example.

So this week, in that spirit, I wanted to share everything that I have tried to use that just has not worked for me and why. Here we gooooo:

Number 1 - Mailchimp…. SORRY I had to say it. The platform blows, look at last week’s post to see why: click here

Number 2 - Any sort of AI email builder. I have tried a bunch of these, all of which promise ‘instant email creation with the help of AI.’ They promise the ability to simply give the software a few prompts, and all of a sudden, you will have a beautiful email that your audience will love.

I have yet to see this be the case. The images come out weird, the text is flat, and the placement of the text on the images almost always contrasts weird. Now, these tools can be used, but as an agency, they have to either save us time or create creative that is better than what our designers can create.

Number 3 - Retention.com… This tool promises to reveal who visits your website and reveal their email address, and allows you to email them even if they have not opted in.

While our favourite email marketer, Chase Dimond, used to recommend them and is a part-owner in the company, the only thing I have seen this tool do is increase people’s spam complaint rates and trash the deliverability.

Number 4 - Any sort of sign-up form tool that promises to increase your sign-up form conversion rate. Pro tip… that metric does not actually matter, what matters is how many people convert after the sign-up form submission, not how many people enter their email address. These tools are optimising for a metric that really does not affect the bottom line of a business.

Now, I am sure there are more, but for the time being, this is my list.
